Midnight Sun Forums: Marlin Fever

I’ve found that marlin fever is a tough fever to shake.  We had some great days on the ocean for the ten days we were at Va. Beach.  Caught a lot of white marlin, dolphin, and small tuna’s.  Had a few pretty days, and a lot of rough days, but I just can’t put into words what we saw and learned while I was down there.  At times the marlin were on the surface splashing and jumping like bluefish, and birds were all over them.  I will stop going on and on, and let the pictures do the talking.  Just want to thank everyone who came down and fished with us, what a ten days!

Dolphin always proved to be great action.

Thanks gang enjoyed fishing with ya’ll.

You can’t have anything but a good day when  you see a sunrise like this over a slick cam ocean, and what a day it was.

Another release with a release reel.

Little Tangier reaps big rewards from ESPN

For seven days in late July, film crews, copywriters and media executives descended on Tangier Island with the sole purpose of turning the small island in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay into the center of the sports world.

Richmond-based ad shop The Martin Agency brought the crews in to shoot commercials for ESPN’s online live sports programming website ESPN3.com.

But the big winner of the production was Tangier Island and its 500 residents.

"I believe [the ads] are going to bring us a lot of revenue," said Renee Tyler, the town manager and an actress in one of the spots.

She’s confident the ads will create an awareness of the island and draw tourists.

The ads, which began airing Monday, tout Tangier Island as the biggest sports town in America . . . per capita. The spots show the island’s sites and locals talking about their favorite college football teams and the importance of sports.

Martin chose Tangier Island because it was so remote and got wired for high-speed Internet access last year, said Adam Stockton, art director on the campaign.

The ads are meant to show that no matter how isolated you are, you can view your favorite sports teams on ESPN3, he said.

A total of nine spots run on the ESPN3 family of networks, including Monday Night Football.

The campaign also features a YouTube channel, an ESPN Facebook page and banner ads on several popular websites including SportingNews.com.

Southport Boats halts operations, will be sold

Southport Boats suspended operations pending a sale of the company’s assets by American Global Yacht Group, which purchased Southport’s assets last June.

Operations were suspended last week, Southport’s former CEO, Frank Longino, told Soundings Trade Only this morning. About 15 employees will be affected by the suspension, he said.

"AGYG originally purchased Southport as part of a strategic plan to purchase and manufacture Southport Boats, as well as other boat brands, and market those brands through AGYG boat and yacht sales locations," the company said in a statement.

"Subsequent to the Southport purchase, however, AGYG exited the boat sales and brokerage business and closed all their locations, leaving Southport’s boat manufacturing operation the only AGYG operating subsidiary," the company added.

The sale includes all assets of the company, the trade name and records, and can be completed with or without the lease on Southport’s 52,000-square-foot facility in Leland, N.C.

"Southport remains a strong brand, with over 400 units in the field and an involved, supportive customer base," Longino said. "We anticipate a quick and orderly sales process. There’s been quite a lot of interest."

Midnight Sun Charters Take Boy Scout Troop 36 from Washington, Virginia

Really enjoyed fishing with troop 36 from Washington, Va.  Was a great group of kids; and father’s, and I really enjoyed fishing with ya’ll.  Hope ya’ll had a great learning experience, and look forward to seeing  you again real soon.

Pretty redfish kept the boys busy most of the morning.

Congrats to Main Hutcheson for catching this 49" release citation.  What a fish!

The boys learned a lot about conservation and releasing fish, this undersized cobia was released back to the bay as well, but it’s always cool to catch different species.

Sometimes the fish are so big it takes two guys to hold it up.

Multiple hook ups.

Finished the day up trolling for some blues, and then Kenny showed them how to clean there catch and we called it a day.  Can’t thank you guys enough for coming down here and allowing us to help the boys get their badge, and look forward to seeing ya’ll again

White marlin biting in record numbers

During this year’s White Marlin Open tournament, anglers on the West Ocean City-based Billfisher broke the single-day record for marlin catch-and-release with 26.

"People thought that was absolutely amazing," said Marty Gary, a fisheries ecologist with the state Department of Natural Resources.

The record didn’t stand long. A few days later on Aug. 30, Capt. John Duffie and his crew aboard the Billfisher caught and released 57 white marlin.

Fishing Forecast: Week of Sept. 9 to 15

Last year around this time, Capt. Steve Richardson and a crew of expert offshore anglers set the East Coast trolling record for white marlin releases in a day by catching and releasing 41 fish.

On Richardson’s big day, 16 Rudee Inlet boats combined to release 320 white marlin. A week before, nine boats in the Big Money Open tournament released 143 billfish.

Despite Earl, anglers enjoy good fishing

A busy week and weekend ahead for boaters and anglers. Though Hurricane Earl caused some issues with boats being sent inland from coastal marinas, other anglers indicated they still planned to fish the entire weekend regardless.
