Tall ship captains stunned that the Bounty left port

When Hurricane Sandy was forming in the Caribbean, Capt. Dan Moreland decided his square-rigged sailing ship, the Picton Castle, wasn’t going anywhere soon.

Weather forecasts showed the late October storm was getting big, and it was impossible to know where it was going. Moreland postponed the Picton Castle’s scheduled departure from Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, for the South Pacific.

He was shocked to learn Capt. Robin Walbridge had taken the tall sailing ship Bounty to sea with the hurricane approaching, leaving New London, Conn., en route to St. Petersburg, Fla., he said.

“I can’t imagine there being any reason at all for being out there,” Moreland said. “It’s mind-boggling.”

He testified by phone from Tahiti on Wednesday during the Coast Guard hearing into the Bounty’s Oct. 29 sinking about 90 miles off Cape Hatteras.

Walbridge was lost at sea, and another crew member, Claudene Christian died. The Coast Guard rescued 14 people.

Capt. Jan Miles of the Pride of Baltimore II, who also testified Wednesday, said he was stunned Walbridge had set sail. Miles’ ship rode out Sandy docked in Baltimore.

He said one of his goals is to expose the Pride II to the least amount of heavy weather as possible.

Both Moreland and Miles said they didn’t believe a ship such as the Bounty is safer at sea than at port during a hurricane. Walbridge had told the Bounty crew one reason the ship was leaving was because it would be safer at sea.

Miles wrote an open letter to Walbridge after the sinking, calling his decision to sail “reckless in the extreme.”

Moreland said the Bounty probably could have tied up safely in New London or gone to New Bedford, Mass., or Mystic Seaport, Conn., to weather the storm in port.

The purpose of the hearing is to figure out what caused the Bounty to sink and how to prevent a similar event. It also will examine whether there was any misconduct, inattention to duty, negligence or willful violation of the law.

Undercover Wildlife Operation Cracks Down on Poaching in North Carolina, Georgia

MULTI-AGENCY OPERATION SOMETHING BRUIN CHARGING MORE THAN 80 VIOLATORS

RALEIGH,N.C. (Feb. 20, 2013) — State and federal wildlife officials announced today an undercover operation involving more than 80 wildlife violators and as many as 900 wildlife violations detected.

Primary violations stem from illegal bear hunting but include an array of wildlife and game law charges. The investigation continues and more charges are possible.

The four-year investigation targeted poachers in North Carolina and Georgia, with some work in adjacent states.

Officers with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission infiltrated poaching circles to document violations including bear baiting, illegal take of bears, deer and other wildlife, illegal use of dogs, operation of illegal bear enclosures in North Carolina, and guiding hunts on national forest lands without the required permits.

Officers began making arrests Tuesday. Operation Something Bruin partners also include the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Park Service.

“Operation Something Bruin documented hundreds of wildlife violations,” said Col. Dale Caveny, law enforcement chief for the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission. “These arrests bring an immediate halt to those crimes and, we hope, will make would-be violators think twice before breaking the law.”

Simultaneous press conferences were held this morning in Asheville, N.C., and Gainesville, Ga., to announce the results of the four-year undercover operation.

“Wildlife is a shared public resource and conservation is a shared responsibility” said Gordon Myers, executive director of the N.C.Wildlife Resources Commission. “North Carolinians can assist wildlife enforcement officers in their duties by reporting possible violations. We all have a vested interest in safeguarding wildlife from poaching. By targeting wildlife thieves, Operation Something Bruin helps protect our outdoor heritage and conserves wildlife for future generations.”

Some E15 sellers don’t label pump

A recent survey found that 35 percent of the registered sellers of E15 are not labeling the higher-ethanol gas at the pump.

Six of the 17 registered sellers of E15 had not labeled the pump accordingly, according to Cindy Squires, chief counsel of public affairs and director of regulatory affairs for the National Marine Manufacturers Association.

The survey also found that several service stations selling the fuel blended with 15 percent ethanol were not registered, as required by the Renewable Fuel Standard, the Environmental Protection Agency mandate that calls for an overall reduction in the fuel supply through the use of biofuels.

“After the gas stations were surveyed, it turned out six of those sites had not even put a basic warning label on the pump,” Squires told Soundings Trade Only. “That’s very concerning to us. Even with all the scrutiny on E15 these sellers didn’t bother to even label the pump.”

One of the conditions stations must adhere to in order to sell E15 is to sign up to have a survey of their operations performed.

“It’s part of the EPA’s effort to make sure they’re fulfilling the mandates they’ve put forward,” Squires said.

“Now there are 18 registered program sites, and we’ve just heard that there may be some sites that aren’t registered, so they may not be complying with anything,” Squires said. “This is from the firm that they are required to hire to check on their compliance, so it’s troubling something that simple can’t be complied with.”

The sellers of E15 are in Iowa, Kansas and South Dakota.
