VA SHORE FISHING REPORT: Rockfish stick around on the bayside, seaside beaches

While red drum fishing dwindled for visiting and local anglers, numbers of rock stuck around this week on the bayside.

Mark Snook of Chris’ Bait and Tackle in Capeville reported that rock has been caught from Kiptopeke to Cape Charles.

Anglers are finding the fish using live eels.

Don Varney of Don’s Tackle Shop in Wachapreague reported that stripers in the 18-23-inch range have been caught around Harborton and Onancock.

Varney said the best bets for snagging the fish are casting with red and white Spro bucktails and jigging with crippled herring.

Farther north around Chincoteague, stripers are still showing up off Assateague beach.

Jimmy Vasiliou of Captain Steve’s Bait and Tackle on the island reported that anglers are trolling for rock at Assateague beach using cut bunker.

Vasiliou said rock fishing is still hit or miss but anglers should expect more numbers in the coming weeks as the fish migrates south from Delaware.

On the bayside, smaller rock are being spotted at Saxis.

Anglers still in search of red drum found a few numbers off the beach and around Wallops Island.

The inshore wrecks off of Chincoteague are producing a few numbers of sea bass.

Matt Abell of Seahawk Sports Center in Pocomoke City, Md., reported that rock are being caught west of Tangier Island inside the Shipping Channel.

Anglers there have been jigging with crippled herrings and trolling with bucktails.

Freshwater fishing inside the Pocomoke River has been fair with catches of crappies and pickerels, according to Abell.

Abell said 2-inch curtail grubs tipped with minnows have been doing the trick for the freshwater species.
